Endellion Quartet returns to Loughborough
One of the oldest established and finest string quartets in the world comes to Loughborough University on Wednesday December 2nd when the Endellion String Quartet makes a welcome return to the Cope Auditorium.
Now in their thirtieth year, the Endellion comprises violinists Andrew Watkinson and Ralph de Souza, Garfield Jackson on Viola and David Waterman on Cello.
Their schedule has included regular tours of North and South America and concerts in Australasia, the Far East, the Middle East, South Africa and every West European country.
In Britain, they have appeared at nearly all of the major series and festivals and regularly broadcast on BBC radio and television; they have appeared at the Proms and been featured in the week-long programmes ‘Artist of the Week’ and ‘Artists in Focus’.
Guest artists they have worked with include members of the former Amadeus Quartet, Sir Thomas Allen, Joshua Bell, Michael Collins, Steven Isserlis, Mitsuko Uchida and Tabea Zimmerman. In 1996 the quartet were winners of the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Best Chamber Ensemble.
As well as their Cambridge Residency, the Endellion has undertaken three short-term residencies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the USA. Since 2001 they have been Associate Quartet of the Royal Northern College of Music and in 2004 they began a Residency at The Venue, Leeds.
The Endellion's EMI recording of the complete string chamber music of Britten was selected as Chamber Music Recording of the Year by both the Daily Telegraph and The Guardian and was the most highly recommended version in Radio 3’s 'Record Review'.
The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians called them "....the finest quartet in Britain, playing with poise, true intonation, excellent balance and a beautiful tone."
For their Loughborough concert, the Endellion will be playing Haydn's Quartet Opus 103, Janacek's Quartet No.2 and the Mendelssohn Quartet in A minor Op.13.
The Endellion String Quartet can be heard on Wednesday December 2nd at the Cope Auditorium, Loughborough. The concert begins at 7.30pm and, as with all Concert Season events, tickets are available now from the Loughborough Town Hall Box Office, either in person, by telephone on 01509 231914 or from their website at www.loughboroughtownhall.co.uk/bookings.
