Target Audience

BME staff / managers

Overview

6 day course commencing in May usually each year either in London or in the East Midlands. Register your interest by September/October each year for the following year.

Are you a black member of staff and see yourself moving into a senior management and leadership position in the future?

Are you a manager that would like to develop one of your staff who is BME to bigger and better things?

Stellar HE Development Programme has been designed specifically to develop and implement leadership strategies that reflect the unique challenges and experiences of BME academic and professional staff across the HE sector.

It will equip Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Academic and Professional Staff with the competences to draw on their diversity as a leadership strength and the strategies to navigate their environments where they are visible minorities in a majority context. The programme is structured to include the following elements:

  1. Six interactive workshop sessions.
  2. A range of leadership diagnostic tools including the Factor 8 Different Leaders Assessment Tool, Clifton Strengths Finder and the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI).
  3. Case studies and simulations.
  4. Individual Critical Business Projects.
  5. Executive coaching sessions.
  6. Action Learning.

The programme is accredited by the Institute of Leadership and Management and on completion of the programme candidates receive a certificate. Financial benefits could be gained for the University from the Business Critical Project undertaken and other benefits could include standards being raised and policies and services being improved.

2011 Loughborough participant: The programme is a very good opportunity to learn more about your strengths and weaknesses and then developing strategies to address these.

2012/13 Loughborough participant: ''The course has helped with my self-belief and confidence and since the course I have made more effort in increasing my visibility in my School and the change has been noticed. I have now looking into progressing my career within the School with the possibility that this will happen soon. Without the course I think I would have just been happy to stay where I was. I would definitely recommend the course to other BME staff especially those who are not sure about how they fit into the university or what leadership qualities they possess. The feedback from the different psychometrics and personality tests, what you learn about yourself during the team building, coaching sessions, leadership exercises and workshops is priceless… at least it was for me.''

This is all in a safe environment which will be challenging as well as rewarding.

The recommended timeline for completion of the programme is six months to give an opportunity to factor in the assessments and assignments between modules and for participants to apply the learning back in their places of work.
