Housing

Key messages from the Roadshows:

The Housing Roadshows have finished for this year, but fear not,the key messages that were given are below and you can pick up a copy of the Big Guide to Living Off Campus from Student Services (Bridgeman Building) or access online.

The Housing Fair is being held on 12th December in room 1, Students' Union- this is your opportunity to meet landlords and letting agents to get an idea of what is available so you can start making informed choices.

Key messages:

1. Don't rush into renting- There is always a rumour that you have to rent now to get the best houses. This is not true and our statistics show that students who rent early have more problems with their properties and housemates than those who wait.

2. You can apply to go back into halls- You can do this online from 1st December. You will know if you have been successful by the end of February, giving you plently of time to secure a house in town if you have not been successful.

3. Having a contract for a University hall is by far the safest option especially if you are:

  • Considering a placement but are not totally sure
  • Change your mind about studying at Loughborough (or are asked to leave).

4. Wait until you have the results of your January assessments- if they are not as good as you had hoped you may have to consider what you will do next. It is a sad, but true fact that many students do decide to leave at the end of the first year, and if they have signed a contract for the house you have a problem if you cannot find anyone to take your place.

5. Choose your housemates carefully- For two reasons:

  • You have not known them for very long and you may not be friends with them in a few month's time.
  • They may have a different level of income to you and be able to afford a higher rent.

6. Work out your budget before you look at properties- you need to know what YOU can afford! If you cannot afford the same rent as your friends, you need to look for a different set of people to live with so you are not overstretching and causing yourself financial problems.

7. Visit the only website with University Approved accommodation before you look anywhere else: Loughborough StudentPad.

Housing Fair

The Housing Fair will be your opportunity to meet with a wide selection of landlords and letting agents on campus.

Date for your diary: To be advised - please watch your emails and our Facebook page for more information

The individual landlords all have to be accredited with DASH- Decent and Safe Homes.

The letting agents all have to comply with the law regarding membership of redress schemes and compliance with the law as to posting their charges and redress scheme membership on their websites.

The ONLY University approved (off-campus) properties are available on Loughborough StudentPad

By having these people/businesses on campus does not imply that the University or any of it's departments  endorses these organisations, and students are always advised to seek advice from the Student Advice and Support Service for a contract check before signing or paying anything.
