Student Advice and Support Service

Money problems

There are numerous reasons why students have problems with money. It might be because you are stuggling to budget, or that you have had an unexpected problems.

We have advisers who can help you whatever the reason.

If you are in financial hardship you might be able to get some help from a hardship fund. All the information on eligibility and how to apply is below.

The Hardship Fund

The University has some money to help students who are in financial hardship due to unforeseen circumstances. An award from this fund is not automatic and students need to make a full application which will be assessed.

Please note that the Hardship Fund for the 17/18 academic year will close to undergraduates at the end of term on Wednesday 20 June, but will remain open topostgraduates.

2018 Hardship Fund Summer Scheme for Undergraduates

The Hardship Fund Summer Scheme is intended to help undergraduate students who face financial difficulties during the summer vacation.

Financial assistance may be granted to students living independently over the summer and those unable to support themselves financially. For example: if they need to remain in Loughborough for the vacation due to family, personal or health difficulties or if family circumstances mean they must contribute to the household budget if living at home. It is expected that students will have attempted to find paid work or other means of supporting themselves over the summer, but if they have reasonable grounds for not doing so then this can be taken into account.

Applications will be accepted from 21 June 2018 onwards and decisions/payments made within four weeks of receipt of a completed application.

Applications will be assessed over the 13 week period of the summer vacation. The standard application form can be used to make an application.  Students are required to set out their specific circumstances over the summer. In general, term time student finance will not be treated as income during the summer vacation but eligible students are expected to have borrowed a government maintenance loan during the 17/18 academic year.

Postgraduates continue to be eligible to apply to the Hardship Fund during the summer.  Postgraduate assessments will be based on the full period of their academic year.
