Doctoral Researcher : Finding information for your literature review and beyond - practice

About this event

Overview:  This session allows participants to put the theory of literature searching into practice in a computer lab.  You will be able to test and evaluate the search strategies and statements that have been developed in 'Finding resources for your literature review and beyond - Theory', as well as trying out ciitation searching techniques and setting up alerts to keep you up-to-date and further develop your knowledge of your research topic.  Expert staff will be on hand to facilitate the session and provide guidance on resources and strategies.  You will also learn the key skill of criticallly assessing the results that you can find to further develop your search strategy.

Learning outcomes:

Participants will be able to:

  1. select the resources appropriate to their research topic
  2. search electronic resources available at Loughborough University
  3. adapt their search statements to a variety of electronic interfaces
  4. perform citation searches in relevant databases
  5. critically evaluate search results
  6. evaluate and adapt their search statements
  7. keep up-to-date with new research outputs in their subject of interest
  8. meet and network with other doctoral researchers from across campus

  

Additional information: This session is recommended for all new research postgraduates and relates to the Researcher Development Framework's Domain A - Knowledge and Intellectual Abilities: A1 Knowledge base and A2 Cognitive abilities.

Other information: Attendees must attend 'Finding resources for your literature review and beyond - Theory' before they attend this course.
