OneDrive for Business is included in the University Office 365 service for staff and students, that provides a place for you to store, share, and sync your work files. You can update and share your files from any device with OneDrive for Business. You can even work on Office documents with others at the same time. Click here for more information.  

Getting started!

To help you take full advantage of the OneDrive for Business service we have put together some helpful user guides and FAQs to help you get started.

First-time setup

If this is the first time you have used your Loughborough University OneDrive, you will need to complete the following steps to set it up:

Open a browser and go to http://office365.lboro.ac.uk

Sign in with your Loughborough University credentials (username and password) and click Login. 

Note: A further step may be displayed asking you to choose your preferred display language and home time zone. Select the Language as English (United Kingdom) and the Time Zone as (UTC +00:00) Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London

You will be directed to your Outlook email inbox (this will be empty for Students). Click on the App launcher (small grid) in the top left-hand corner and then click on the OneDrive button

OneDrive for Business Sync Client: Mac OS X

Downloading the OneDrive Sync Client means that you can save your files directly to your OneDrive storage space in the same way you would normally save to your Documents. This is far quicker and easier than opening your OneDrive storage space in an internet browser and is easy to setup.

You can download the OneDrive for Business Sync Client through the App Store (Note: Requires Mac OS X Snow Leopard or newer)

IMPORTANT: If you are currently using the OneDrive Mac Store app, you must first uninstall it before installing the latest build of the new OneDrive sync client.

Search and select OneDrive in the App store from your Mac.

Once downloaded the app will open automatically.

Alternatively, it can be opened by selecting the following: Finder > Applications > OneDrive.

When prompted to enter your email details, use your Loughborough account and left click Sign in

  • For students - your email address ending in @student.lboro.ac.uk
  • For staff - your email address ending in @lboro.ac.uk

 

You will receive a 2nd prompt to enter your email details again.

After entering your email details, you will be redirected to the Loughborough University Login page.

Enter your Username and Password then left click Login.

Once signed in you will be asked to Choose OneDrive Folder Location.

If you have a preference for where your OneDrive folder will be stored, then navigate to the folder. If not just left click Choose this location and then Next from the window that appears

Ensure that the box Sync all files and folders in OneDrive - Loughborough University is ticked. Left click Next.

Your OneDrive Sync Client is now complete and you can view your saved files from the Finder.

OneDrive for Business Sync Client: Windows 10

Using the OneDrive Sync Client means that you can save your files directly to your OneDrive storage space in the same way you would normally save to your My Documents. This is far quicker and easier than opening your OneDrive storage space in an internet browser and is easy to setup.

Windows 10 comes with OneDrive already installed. To set up your OneDrive on Windows 10 with your university account follow these steps:

Click to download OneDrive to your device

When prompted to enter your email details, use your Loughborough account and left click Sign in

  • For students - your email address ending in @student.lboro.ac.uk
  • For staff - your email address ending in @lboro.ac.uk

 

You will receive a 2nd prompt to enter your email details again.

After entering your email details, you will be redirected to the Loughborough University Login page.

Enter your Username and Password then left click Login.

You will be shown the location of your OneDrive folder. You can change this by left clicking Change location, though we recommend leaving it as default and left clicking Next.

Ensure that the box Sync all files and folders in OneDrive – Loughborough University is ticked and left click Next.

Your OneDrive Sync Client is now complete and you can view your saved files from File Explorer in the same way you would access My Documents.

Accessing your OneDrive

Once you have set up your OneDrive you can access it directly online:

Select the following link: http://onedrive.lboro.ac.uk

Sign in with your Loughborough University credentials (username and password) and click Login

You will be taken directly to your Office 365 OneDrive for Business storage space 

Accessing and using Microsoft Office Online

Note:  Before accessing MS Office online you will need to set up OneDrive for Business storage. For help and guidance see Accessing your OneDrive for Business Storage Online tab.

From your OneDrive for Business storage online, left click on the New icon in the bar near the top of the page.

From the drop-down list, left click the type of document you would like to create (WordExcelPowerPoint or OneNote)

Your chosen document will load in the internet browser and you can begin editing.

 

Note:

a. Your files will save automatically to your OneDrive

b. If you have the full version of Microsoft Office downloaded on your computer, you can choose to open your document in the full program for increased functionality (left click Edit Document/Edit Workbook/Edit Presentation)

Editing a document online

Editing a document in Office online is the same as the above steps for creating a new document, except you open the document by left clicking it from your list of saved documents in your OneDrive.

FAQs

What is the difference between OneDrive and OneDrive for Business

You may already have OneDrive at home with your free consumer Microsoft/Outlook.com account.  This is a personal/consumer service and is not provided or managed by IT Services at Loughborough University. 

IT Services provide your OneDrive for Business for University-related purposes. Your OneDrive for Business is managed by Loughborough University and lets you share and collaborate on work documents with co-workers

How do I access OneDrive for Business from a campus computer lab?

In University provided computer labs you will access your OneDrive for Business via a web browser at http://onedrive.lboro.ac.uk or the OneDrive shortcut provided on the desktop.

How can I access my files if I forget my OneDrive for Business password?

If you forget your University log-in/password please follow the guidance on our password guidance pages.

How do I upload files and folders to my OneDrive for Business?

Upload files or folders to OneDrive for Business so you can get to them from anywhere from nearly any device. The following link; Microsoft video shows you how to add documents, spreadsheets, presentations, or other files by using the Upload command or by using drag and drop.

How can I access my files if I delete them from OneDrive for Business?

You can restore them from the Recycle Bin following the guidance from Office Support: Finding lost/missing files & Restoring previous document versions

Are there any restrictions when saving to OneDrive for Business?

There are some technical limits outlined in here. However, it should be noted that with web services like Office 365 these change quickly.  For example, at the time of writing, the file name path limit has increased – Click here for more information.

What benefits does this offer me over typical “onsite” file store?

Unlimited capacity – starting at 5TB per person, with the University able to request higher amounts where required for University activities. 

Security – With online storage services, data is encrypted both during transmission and while at rest, ensuring no unauthorised users can access the files.

Recovery – Your documents are automatically backed up.  A recycle bin and complete version makes recovering work quick and simple.

Accessibility – From tablets to smartphones, netbooks to desktops, you can access your account from any internet connection, whether you're on a mobile browser or a University computer.

Syncing – Syncing ensures your files are automatically updated across all of your devices. This way, the latest version of a file you saved on your desktop is available on your smartphone.

Sharing – Whether you want to share a single document or an entire folder with hundreds of documents, OneDrive for Business allows you to easily share files with just a few clicks.

Collaboration – OneDrive for Business allows multiple people to edit and collaborate on a single file or document. You don’t have to worry about tracking the latest version or who has made what changes!
