Transgender and non-binary students and staff support

Loughborough University is committed to supporting staff and students who are transgender or gender-nonconforming or who are questioning or exploring their gender identity.

The Equality Act 2010 sets out legal rights and protection under the heading of 'gender re-assignment'. For our purposes we expand this protection to the broader category of 'gender identity'.

It is important to recognise that neither definition requires any medical diagnosis or intervention. Rather they apply as soon as a person decides that their gender identity does not match the gender they were assigned at birth, or that they wish to change their gender expression.

We have a Transgender and Non-binary Working Group which oversees work to improve our systems, policies and processes in order to better support our trans staff and students. There are also LGBT+ groups for both staff and students which provide support, community and events throughout the year.

Support for Transgender Students

Students who are trans, or who feel they may be and want to explore these issues can seek support from Student Services, their tutor, or the LSU LGBT+ Association.

Information for students on how to change their name and gender in their student record and who can help with this process is available in the Student Handbook.

Diversity an inclusivity in learning and teaching

The LSU LGBT+ Association have created this video on using gender-neutral language in teaching.

Support for Transgender Staff

Depending on their needs, staff are encouraged to speak to their line manager, the Staff LGBT+ Group or seek support from the Employee Assistance Program or Counselling Service.
