Opportunities in enterprise

Enterprise is at the heart of the University’s vision and strategy and academic staff’s enterprise achievements are formally recognised in recruitment, reward and promotion.

The Enterprise team can help you to enhance the impact of your work, open up new opportunities for external partnership and funding, and even provide a business base for your partners.

Enterprise Projects Group (EPG) funding

EPG manages moneys received from the HEFCE Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF) and the EPSRC Impact Acceleration Account (IAA).

This competitive funding supports researchers in creating social, economic and cultural impact from their work and can be used to support a variety of activities including enterprise fellowships, and market analysis and business case development.

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP)

A KTP is a three-way collaboration between the University, a graduate, and an external organisation, which can be a commercial company or service provider including an education authority, NHS Trust or local council.

KTPs offer benefits to all parties, but as an academic they can:

Consultancy work

Boosting your contacts, experience and your income

Academic staff can conduct up to 30 days consultancy work each calendar year. Consultancy work offers you the opportunity to develop new external contacts in business, government bodies or charities, which could lead to future collaborative opportunities – whilst gaining experience and earning some additional income.

The University’s Business Development Team can provide you with professional support and expert advice throughout any consultancy work, ensuring that your interests are protected and your personal liabilities are minimised.

Intellectual Property (IP)

If you’re working on something that could benefit others or may have some commercial value, you need to make sure your work is properly protected before you release any information.

The Enterprise Office’s Intellectual Property Team can provide expert advice, guidance and training, to help you to determine the best way forward. As your project develops, the team can also provide support with activities such as marketing, securing funding, legal negotiations and prototyping.

Business accommodation

Loughborough University Science and Enterprise Park (LUSEP) is home to over 50 organisations employing 2,000 people. With a gateway policy that encourages collaboration, these organisations form a base of knowledge-based organisations receptive to collaborative opportunities.

If you have external partners seeking business accommodation now, or in the future, LUSEP offers an excellent base. The new Advanced Technology Innovation Centre offers rent-a-desk and small to larger office and workshop/laboratory space. LUSEP’s planned expansion will offer 200,000 sq ft floor space, meaning there are some exciting design and build opportunities as well.

Find out more about enterprise

Every academic school has an Associate Dean for Enterprise (ADE) who should be your first point of contact for any questions you have regarding getting involved in enterprise. Details of all ADEs are available online in the academic school structure.

You can also find out about all opportunities on the Enterprise Staff Intranet. You will need your staff log in to view this information.
