Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS)

For University employees grade 1 - 5

The LGPS is a nationwide scheme and the value is based on your average career earnings. Every year your benefits build based on your pensionable pay for that year.

Your contribution rate is dependent on your earnings, and includes basic pay and overtime. As your employer, we then pay in the balance of the cost of providing your benefits, after taking into account investment returns.

As a general rule, this means that you will contribute approximately one third of the scheme's costs and we will contribute the rest.

Your contributions

In this scheme your contribution rate is dependent on the following full-time equivalent salary bands.

REMEMBER: The rate is based on your basic pay and any overtime completed.

Pay bands Contribution rates
Up to £13,500 5.5%
£13,501 - £21,000 5.8%
£21,001 - £34,000 6.5%
£34,001 - £43,000 6.8%
£43,001 - £60,000 8.5%
£60,001 - £85,000 9.9%

However, the actual cost to you will be lower than this, as you will make savings via tax relief and national insurance.
