Human Resources

Benefits later in life

Male member of staff on retirement day

Our great working environment, good employment conditions and benefits and excellent opportunities for personal and career development, means that a large proportion of our employees stay with us for a substantial period in their career.

For this reason we offer a number of benefits and support services that are designed to reward employees for their loyalty and commitment, and support and recognise individuals that are nearing retirement.

Long Service award

We’re strong believers in rewarding our employees throughout their time with us. . . but reaching 25 years with an organisation is pretty special isn’t it?

To mark the momentous occasion, we present employees with a Long Service Award. They are presented with a certificate by the Vice Chancellor, and also invited to choose a gift to the value of £150.

Preparing for your retirement

There is no longer a compulsory retirement age in the UK which means, depending on the role you are doing, you may well be able to work on into your seventies or even eighties.

The question is though … ‘is this what you want?’

In our minds, you can never start planning for your future too early. We’re here to support and guide you in preparing for when and how you want to retire. We can talk through your options and also have workshops that you can attend to answer any questions you might have and help you plan for the future.

If you need to access details about your current pension, to aid in any decision making and financial planning, contact our Pensions team

Once you have decided when you want to retire and confirmed the date with HR, there’s just your retirement party to plan and of course you will be invited to the annual ‘Retirement’ dinner.

Celebrating your retirement

Once you’ve made the decision to retire, we won’t let you go quietly!

In October each year, we host a retirement dinner, at which the guests of honour are employees, all of whom have retired since the previous October. Usually held at Burleigh Court on campus, former employees are invited to bring along a partner/guest and enjoy an evening of entertainment and celebration. A photographer will be on hand during the early part of the evening to capture the momentous occasion for you.

Guests attending the retirement evening are also treated to complimentary use of the facilities at Burleigh Springs during the day, as well as a discount on accommodation if required.
