Funding and Awards for Women


The following funding, scholarships and awards are specificially for women and/or those who have recently decided to recommence a career in Higher Education and/or those who have family and caring responsibilities.


British Federation of Women Graduates Scholarships

The British Federation of Women Graduates (BFWG) scholarships are for women who will be in their third year of doctoral studies or part-time equivalent at the time when the awards are given out (the autumn of each year). The awards are given on the basis of evidence of academic excellent. For more information visit: BFWG scholarships


Career Re-etry Fellowships - Wellcome Trust

The Career Re-etry Fellowships are for postdoctoral scientists who have recently decided to recommence a scientific research career after a continuous break of at least two years. It gives such scientists the opportunity to return to high-quality research, with the potential to undertake refresher or further training. The fellowship is particularly suitable for applicants wishing to return to research after a break for family commitments.


Daphne Jackson Trust

Daphne Jackson Fellowships help return scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians to their careers after a break of 2 or more years.


Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship - Royal Society

The Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship is for outstanding scientists in the UK at an early stage of their research career who require a flexible working pattern due to personal circumstances such as parenting or caring responsibilities or health issues.  Female candidates are particularly invited to apply.


Fran Trust

The Fran Trust funds scholarly activity in the fields of feminism, gender or women's studies. The Trust provides small grants of up to £500 for postgraduate students studying at UK universities to attend and present papers on a gender-related topic at academic conferences in the UK.


Grace Chishol Young Fellowships - London Mathematical Society

The London Mathematical Society offers two Grace Chishol Young Fellowships each year to mathematicians who need support when their mathematical career is interrupted by family responsibilities, relocation of partner, or other similar circumstance.


L'Oreal UK and Ireland Fellowships for Women in Science

The L'Oréal UK & Ireland Fellowships For Women in Science were launched in January 2007. The Fellowships are awards offered by a partnership between L'Oréal UK & Ireland, the UK National Commission for UNESCO and the Irish National Commission for UNESCO, with the support of the Royal Society. From 2015, Five Fellowships are awarded annually to outstanding female postdoctoral researchers.


Range Rover Evoque WiSE Scholarship

The Range Rover Evoque WiSE Scholarship is an exciting collaboration between Jaguar Land Rover and WISE offering sponsorship to women who are starting an engineering degree course at a UK University or starting an engineering apprenticeship.


Rosaline Franklin Award - Royal Society

The Royal Society Rosalind Franklin Award is awarded annually for an outstanding contribution to any area of STEM. The recipient of the award is expected to spend a proportion of the grant on implementing a project to raise the profile of women in STEM in their host institution and/or field of expertise in the UK.
