Benefits of Athena SWAN

The Athena SWAN Charter demonstrates the commitment to gender equality, good management practice and the advancement and promotion of women in STEMM. It also enhances both internal and external reputation with the development of initiatives to bring about longer term cultural change which will benefit ALL staff.

In 2011,The Chief Medical Officer announced that the National Institute for Health Research would only shortlist medical schools for biomedical research centre and unit funding if they held a Silver Athena SWAN Award. This was later expanded to include Patient Safety Research Centre Funding and Athena have started to work with the Medical and Dental Schools.

Research Councils UK stated in its ‘Statement of Expectations for Equality and Diversity’, that those in receipt of Research Council funding are expected to “provide evidence of ways in which equality and diversity issues are managed at both an institutional and department level”. It recommends that the evidence includes participation in schemes such as Athena SWAN.
