Equality Groups

The University has set up a number of 'Equality Groups' which staff can get involved in. This is a great opportunity to be involved in changing the organisational culture of University life.

Staff Age Group

This group might be more properly described as the "Loughborough University Staff Group for Promoting Fair Practice for issues relating to Age".

Our remit is to act as a management "think tank". More widely, we expect to be an agency for promoting a general awareness of fair attitudes and practice for conduct relating to all age groups. For instance, opportunities for training and promotion should be available to all staff, as this brings considerable advantages to both the individual and the institution. If you are concerned that this may not be case – either in relation to yourself or to a colleague – the Staff Age Group is an important point of contact.

Our main concern is to facilitate conditions that ensure fair, unbiased treatment. That way, staff concerns are validated and the University's reputation as a fair-minded employer is upheld and enhanced. So, if you have a problem, please let us know.

This is a consultative forum that exists to promote fair practice in respect of issues relating to the age of staff and to raise awareness of the benefits of an age-diverse workforce.

Purpose:

  • To be consulted on and to raise issues that concern the policies and practices of Loughborough University that relate to Age.
  • To support the effective development and implementation of Equality and Diversity policies, as required by legislation and by good practice, in relation to Age.
  • To work in conjunction with the Staff Development (Equality and Diversity) Adviser to raise awareness of Age matters amongst all staff and students of the University.
  • To receive reports from the Sub-Committee and to comment where appropriate.
  • To be consulted on and inform the processes for monitoring, impact assessment, evaluation and reviews of Equality and Diversity with regard to Age.

Membership:

All members of Staff who have an interest in issues of Age may be members.

The Officers of the Group shall be:

Chair elected by and from the Staff Age Group.

This is a very exciting time for us with many changes about to take place.  The new Single Equality Commission was set up in October 2007 and includes work on the duty on Gender which imposes a responsibility on public authorities to promote positive working and combat sex discrimination.

The Gender Recognition Act came into force, in early 2005  and the Civil Partnership Regulations from 5th December 2005, both may affect some women and help to change their lives.
