Appointment Committees Code of Practice

Code of Practice on the Composition of Appointment Committees for Posts Attracting Academic and Related Conditions of Service

This sets out the required composition for Appointments Committees for the different staff groups that attract academic and related conditions of service. These rules apply to all vacancies, both of a fixed term and of an open ended nature.

Variations to the compositions set out below may only be agreed in advance by the Provost/Deputy Vice Chancellor.  A maximum of two additional persons may be co-opted to any Appointments Committee to assist it in the performance of its duties.

Both genders must be represented on appointment committees.  Interview panels should not be single gender.  Where a School/Department has difficulty in arranging a gender mix, assistance will be provided by HR.

The Chair of each Appointments Committee must have attended the University's Recruitment and Selection training and be familiar with the University's Equality and Diversity Policy and Procedures.

Staff employed on a grade below the grade of the appointment are not permitted to be a member of an Appointments Committee without the agreement of the Provost/Deputy Vice Chancellor.

Grade 9 (Academic Schools)

Professor (Research and Teaching)

Senior Researcher (Research)*

*appointment to Grade 9 in this job family are exceptional

  • Head of Section
  • Pro Vice-Chancellor (for Research if a research post)

  • Senior Manager from outside the Section

Grade 8 (Academic Schools)

Reader and Senior Lecturer (Research and Teaching)

Senior University Teacher (Teaching and Scholarship)

Senior Research Associate (Research)*

*appointment to Grade 8 in this job family are exceptional

• Pro Vice-Chancellor (Chair)
• Dean
• A Head of Department or Associate Dean
• A Professor from outside the School

For Reader appointments, at least one external assessor

Grade 8 (other than Academic Schools)

Manager (Management and Specialist)

• Pro Vice-Chancellor or Chief Operating Officer, or Director of Finance as appropriate (Chair) 
• Head of Service or nominee
• Two member of staff on at least Grade 8, one being from another section.

Grade 6 and 7 (Academic Schools)

Lecturer (Research and Teaching)

University Teacher (Teaching and Scholarship)

Management positions (Management and Specialist)

Senior Research Associate/Research Associate (Research) - Grade 7 only ( see below re Research Grade 6)

  • Dean or nominee (Chair)
  • Head of Department or Associate Dean
  • Two members of staff on at least grade 7.  For academic and research posts, at least one being a member of academic staff. 

Grade 6 and 7 (other than Academic Schools)

Management positions (Management and Specialist)

  • Head of Service or nominee (Chair)
  • Two members of staff on at least grade 7, at least one from the Management and Specialist job family. 


The following staff who attract Academic and Academic Related Conditions of Service are not subject to the above regulations except that, in all cases of recruitment the panel Chair must have attended the Recruitment and Selection training.

Research Grades 5 and 6
Staff on grade 6 of the Technical Services Job Family
Temporary posts as determined by the Provost/Deputy Vice-Chancellor

Schools/Departments are able to convene Appointments Committees appropriate for the vacancy in question. Good practice must always be followed and further guidance can be found in the University’s Good Recruitment Guide.

Note that all interview panels must comprise at least 2 people.
