Important News from The University and College Union (UCU)

The University and College Union (UCU) is the biggest trade union and professional association for academics, lecturers, trainers, researchers and academic-related staff working in further and higher education throughout the UK. HE employers nationally negotiate with UCU about pay and pensions, and locally Loughborough University must consult with our branch in order to change university policies that affect our members.

UCU has recently announced that, from 1st October, full union membership for research students who teach will be free for up to four years. Although the cost of offering free membership is substantial, UCU wants to invest in the future of our profession with the aim of building a trade union culture across the whole higher education sector.

Being a full member of UCU entitles you to access to employment advice including where necessary our excellent case workers and renowned legal service, direct advocacy and advice by local UCU representatives, a range of CPD opportunities to enable you to get the best out of your career and the right to take part in the union's local and national decision making. It is UCU which negotiates the salaries and working conditions of staff throughout further and higher education and membership gives you a say in what we prioritise in our local and national talks with the employer.

Information about the free membership offer, including details of the benefits associated with being a UCU member, is available here:
