Open Doors 2013

A unique one day event for all disabled students funded by the Alumni Association

On 20th February 2013 the Counselling and Disability Service teamed up with the Careers and Employability Centre for the Open Doors event. The event was targeted at over 2000 students registered with CDS and aimed to provide advice, information and raise awareness about employment issues for disabled students going onto placement, or leaving university and entering a career.

This unique event consisted of talks on issues such as disclosure and preparing for careers fairs, along with optional workshops from various employment sectors, including finance (HSBC, KPMG), management consultancy (Accenture), the public sector (Leicestershire County Council) and The Teaching Agency. Employability were also in attendance to give a presentation on how to market yourself positively in the recruitment process as a disabled person, and we were privileged to have a talk from Emily Johnson, an Alumni of the University, on setting up your own business.

The event also welcomed Remploy who provided expert advice to students on disabled recruitment, and equipment suppliers Sight and Sound, Remtek and ReachData, who displayed useful equipment for disabled employees in the workplace.

‌Students were also provided with goody bags and an opportunity to network during a buffet dinner at the end of the event.

The afternoon was a great success, attracting over 40 students, as well as the Vice Chancellor Bob Alison, the Students Union VP for Welfare and Diversity Georgie Court, and members of staff from across the University.  Students reported they had found sessions useful, and staff and speakers informative and knowledgeable.  “It’s good to know what my rights when I get a job”, commented one student, whilst another went on to say “it has been really good to meet other disabled students from across campus as sometimes I feel like the only one”.

CDS and CEC also took the opportunity to launch an information booklet they have developed about employment issues which has also been funded by the Alumni Association, a PDF of which is below and which is also available on line.
