Helen Shaw

Disability Advisor

PGDip British Sign Language / English Interpreting, MA Disability Studies

01509 228412

Helen is a registered qualified British Sign Language Interpreter (RSLI) with specialised responsibility for Deaf/hard of hearing students, provided services directly in BSL where appropriate. She also holds the case load for students with a visual impairment and those with long term health conditions such as ME, diabetes and Crohn’s disease.

The role of the Disability Advisor is to offer information, advice and guidance to disabled students to support them to reach their academic potential. This involves, amongst other things, information on applying for funding through Disabled Support Allowance, recommending alternative examination arrangements to the Department, advising on suitable university accommodation and liaising with academic departments and other student services to offer a holistic approach for the student.

Support is also provided to prospective students in determining whether Loughborough would be the best place to study, and helping to arrange for the University to meet any specific requirements.

The Disability Advisor also provides disability related training to staff and students whilst assisting the Disability Support Team Manager in promoting good practice throughout the University.
