Proposed changes to DSA in the A/Y 2015

15 May 2014

You may have heard in the news that Disabled Students Allowance (DSA) the grant that pays for support for disabled students is going to be drastically cut in 2015.  Under the current proposals by the Minister for Universities most dyslexic students wouldn’t be legible for DSA, standard specification lap tops and computers would no longer be provided, and services such as note taking will no longer be funded.

Disability Services in the HE sector are currently responding to the Ministers statement and one of these responses is the setting up of a petition with the aim of securing enough signatures to prompt a proper debate on this in parliament.  I am therefore asking you to support disabled students by taking a few moments to read the information below, and if you feel you can then log on and sign the petition which can be found here;

 Text of petition below.

Stop cuts to funding for disabled and dyslexic students

Responsible department: Department for Business, Innovation and Skills

David Willets, the Minister for Universities and Science, has announced the "modernisation" of the government grant for students with disabilities, the Disabled Students Allowances (DSA). The initial detail of this modernisation is a series of cuts in provision, placing the funding burden on Universities and individual students.
We the undersigned believe that these cuts will:

Reduce access to higher education for students with disabilities and dyslexia
Reduce successful outcomes with less support meaning lower degree classifications for students who require additional support
Reduce the employment prospects for graduates with disabilities and dyslexia
Increase the drop out/failure rate in universities amongst disabled and dyslexic students
Lead to further inequality within society.

We therefore call on the government to withdraw this policy statement made by the minister, David Willetts.

Details of David Willett's statement can be accessed here:

PLEASE NOTE:  These changes only apply to new students after 2015.  If you already have DSA in place this will not affect you.

Some further reminders regarding DSA:
