Loughborough Employability Award

What do Students and Employers think?

"(The Award) is an integral part of what you are doing at university. It improves your employability and it is using activities to demonstrate your skills to employers."

"(The Award) gives excellent recognition of your participation in activities outside your degree programme."

"The Award was beneficial to enable me to see what skills I have gained that employers would be interested in. The award provided a good way to assess these skills and improve on any weaknesses."

"I wanted to let you know I heard last week from a successful placement interview for next year. I found being part of the Award not only enhanced my CV but also prepared me to answer competency-based interview questions using my Award activities and the skills I gained from them. I'm one of the first on my programme to get a placement so the Award clearly makes a difference!"

'BP looks for graduates that are able to demonstrate not only academic excellence but also have proven employability skills such as team working, communication and organisational skills.  The Loughborough Employability Award provides students with an excellent opportunity to evidence their skills to employers and I would encourage all Loughborough students to take up this opportunity.'
UK Graduate Resourcing Manager, BP International

'Participating in the Loughborough Employability Award helps students to reflect upon and articulate their experiences and achievements outside the classroom.  This really helps both when they are considering career options and what appeals to and suits them, and also when they are communicating with employers. To employers, the Award is a clear indication that a student has shown commitment and a level of competence that distinguishes them from the crowd.'

'Choosing what job you want to do can be a difficult decision. Then actually how to get that job might feel like an even tougher challenge. The Loughborough Employability Award recognises how a student can identify their skills and competencies through extra-curricular activities. It helps candidates develop their own experiences and knowledge into relevant qualities for the workplace and is invaluable to producing a well rounded individual with the skills for employment necessary for a successful career.'
Graduate Recruitment, Deloitte

'We have recruited a number of students from Loughborough University onto our graduate programmes. We are interested in talented students applying to us with strong academic qualifications but just as important are your employability skills – including impact, drive, flexibility, curiosity, integrity and commercial awareness. The Loughborough Employability Award supports this agenda and helps proactive students get one step closer to their desired graduate career in a very competitive market place. As a leading employer of graduates, we recognise the important role played by the university in producing high-calibre, motivated individuals who are ready to enter the world of professional services.'

The LEA prepares you for recruitment

The process you go through to achieve the Award is the process you will go through when you start to apply for graduate employment:

  • describing how you have improved or acquired your skills
  • reflecting on your personal development and providing examples to demonstrate how you have developed and applied those skills.

Employers are looking for well developed examples of how you applied your skills, knowledge and experience and the Award will help you to do this, preparing you for those application forms and interview questions.

Completing the Award will demonstrate to a potential employer that you have a positive attitude towards wanting to make the most of your time and to putting in the extra effort required to achieve an award which recognises that commitment.

Don’t forget to mention your participation in the Award scheme on your CV and in interviews and be prepared for questions about it.

Don’t forget to let us know if you have any feedback from employers about the Award scheme or if you are successful in getting a placement or securing a graduate job!
