During January we are focusing on Assessment.

Throughout the month we will be offering a range of workshops, informal coffee & cake sessions and regularly posting to our blog.

Workshops

Diversifying Assessment - 30th January

Date: Friday 30th January 2015

Venue: RUT0.02 - Ground floor - Rutland Building

Time: 9:30 – 12:30

 

This workshop will explore the links between assessment and student learning. The workshop will include a review of your own assessment materials and encourage discussion around the range of assessment methods used in your curriculum offering.

Please bring any examples of assessment you use, for example, assignment briefs, exam papers, essay titles etc. We will review these materials during the workshop and share ideas.

Objectives

By the end of the session, participants will have:

  • - Consider your current assessment practice
  • - Discuss features of effective assessment practice
  • - Evaluate a range of appropriate assessment methods

This workshop is available to any member of staff involved in teaching/ support of student learning (participants on PG Cert in Academic Practice should note that modules TCP001/2 cover this content).

Introduction to Online Assessment - 14th January

Date: Wednesday 14th January 2015

Venue: RUT1.08 - First floor - Rutland Building

Time: 14.00 – 16.00

 

This session will focus on the application and creation of online assessments using various e-learning tools available at Loughborough. You will be given demonstrations and hands-on experience of using a range of assessment tools, in particular those available through LEARN, plus the opportunity to discuss the practical applications and the suitability of using each tool. Assessment tools covered in this session will include:  

  • LEARN Assignments
  • LEARN Quiz
  • Turnitin / Grademark
  • Questionmark Perception

Objectives

By the end of the session, participants will have:

  • - Consider factors which contribute to effective assessment
  • - Evaluate potential links with other e-learning tools
  • - Have an awareness of the available online assessment tools at Loughborough
  • - Incorporate online assessment into your modules
  • - Plan alternative assessments including e-learning tools

Coffee & Cake Sessions

Optical Mark Recognition – CANCELLED

Date: Wednesday 21st January 2015

Venue: HE0.23 - Clyde Williams Building

Time: 15.00 – 16.00

 

This 1 hour informal session will focus on Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) and will enable participants to explore how this technology can be used effectively in assessment and in other areas. OMR’s summative and formative capabilities will be detailed, along with the service’s amazing time saving ability.

The session will be of particular interest to anyone who sets end of semester exams and/or coursework tests for large cohorts or who sets papers with large numbers of questions.

Group work assessment - 19th January

Date: Monday 19th January 2015

Venue: RUT0.02 - Rutland Building

Time: 15.00 – 16.00

 

This 1 hour informal session will focus on assessment of group work  and will enable participants to explore: when to use group work, what exactly is being assessed, how to write assessment criteria for group work and how technology can be used to aid assessment.

This will be a practice sharing event and participants are encouraged to bring their own group work assignments and associated assessment criteria for discussion.
