Verbal Communication & Voice Health

If you are seeking to enhance your verbal communication skills for effective teaching there is a range of support available. There is a combination of a workshops, short course and one-to-one coaching to help you with general voice health and address any voice/communication issues; whether you want to achieve greater clarity in spoken English, learn techniques for good voice production or work with our specialist tutor on other specific issues.

Making the Most of Your Voice Workshop

A half-day workshop, 'Making the Most of Your Voice', runs regularly throughout the year. This provides help with general voice production and clarity in spoken English. To obtain further details of the workshop, see the dates currently available to book or express an interest in attending in the future please click the button below.

Communicate Course

‘Communicate’ is a short course designed to help you to communicate more clearly and effectively with students, especially in a lecturing context. The course is likely to be of particular interest to colleagues whose first language is not English, though it is open to anyone who wishes to improve their skills in this area of practice. It is often recommended to selected attendees of ‘Making the Most of Your Voice’ as being of further benefit to them.

With a primary focus on enhancing the clarity of your spoken English, the course will cover elements such as English vocal characteristics, exercises to develop a clearer English sound, effective presentation, structuring lectures and effective use of teaching materials and resources. The lead tutor on this course is a specialist voice coach.

This 12-hour course typically runs twice a year as a 6-week evening course. The course is open to both lecturing staff and post-doctoral research staff who teach. Due to limited places on each course priority will be given to academic staff and is usually invite-only, although you are welcome to express an interest in attending through the general OD contact details.

One-to-One Voice Coaching

If you are having issues with your voice health, please discuss this with your line manager and asked to be referred to Occupational Health. Occupational Health may recommend one-to-one support from our specialist voice coach, which will then be arranged for you.
