  1. Can the University cater for dietary requirements?

    We try to cater for everyone’s needs, if you have a special food requirement you can talk to our catering team in confidence.  We can provide expert advice to meet your needs.

  2. How many meals are provided in catered halls?

    Each of our Catered Halls come with a specific meal package. There are currently 3 different types of package offered depending on the hall.

    • 19 meals per week: Three meals a day on week days with Brunch and evening meal at weekends
    • 15 meals per week: Three meals a day on week days only.
    • 10 meals per week: Two meals a day (lunch and evening meal) on week days only.
  3. If I am in a self catered hall, can I eat in a Dining Hall (including info on Dining Package)?

    You can buy a diners+ package from the Card office in the Student Accommodation Centre to purchase meals in our Dining Halls or at many of our retail outlets on campus.  You are also welcome to buy a cash meal in any of our Dining Halls.

    Flexible Dining Package for Hazlerigg-Rutland, Robert Bakewell and John Phillips students

    Due to the popularity of the meal plan offered to the Elvyn Richards students, we are able to offer a similar meal package to students in Hazlerigg-Rutland, Robert Bakewell and John Phillips Halls. 
    This package of 10 meals per week, Monday to Friday (31 weeks - Term Time only); offers students in these halls the flexibility of having lunch and evening meal in the following dining halls:

    • Village Restaurant with Elvyn Dining
    • David Collett
    • Cayley
    • Rutherford
    • Faraday
    • Royce
    • Towers

    This flexible dining package will be attached to your room contract; this would enable you to pay in 3 instalments with your accommodation fees.

    For Hazlerigg-Rutland and Robert Bakewell, this would increase your annual fee from the self catered price of £4,616.60 to £5,754.30 (including the 31 weeks dining package), payable in 3 instalments of £2104.50, £2104.50 and £1543.30.

    For John Phillips, this would increase your annual fee from the self catered price of £5,630.00 to £6,767.70 (including the 31 weeks dining package), payable in 3 instalments.

    Please contact the Student Accommodation Centre to take up this package.

  4. If I choose to live in a catered hall, must I take every meal each day?

    If you live in a catered Hall the food and service costs are incorporated into your fees. These costs have to be paid for whether you choose to eat every meal or not. No refunds can be actioned.

    You can arrange a packed lunch if you cannot attend a meal - you must give the kitchen 24 hours notice.

    All meals must be taken in your own Hall Dining Hall.  Due to the location of The Towers and David Collett Dining Halls, students are able to eat lunch at either venue (Monday to Friday).

    ID cards must be presented at all Hall meals.

  5. Important information - Catering during the Vacations

    Christmas Vacation: Catered Halls - all Catered Hall students can make use of their room during the Christmas Vacation period until 23 December 2011. A brunch and evening meal service will be provided during this period.

    • There is no meal service when the University is closed from 23 December 2011 to 3 January 2012. 
    • Easter Vacation: Royce Hall must vacate and clear their rooms during the 4 week Easter vacation period. 
    • End of year: Brunch only provided during the last week (from 25 June 2012).
  6. What about weekends if I am in a 10 or 15 meal a week hall?

    You can buy a diners+ Card from the Card office in the Student Accommodation Centre to purchase meals at many of our retail outlets on campus.

    If you prefer to cook for yourself, facilities are available within the communal kitchens of 15 meal per week halls to make snacks and light meals. 

    Students on the 10 meals per week option will have use of full kitchen facilities.  For advice and ideas, why not check out studentcooking.TV.

  7. What are the meals like in hall?

    Meals are taken on a self serve basis in your Dining Hall. A wide variety of hot and cold dishes are available for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Our menus always include a vegetarian option.

    Special dietary requirements or Allergies can be accommodated by our Catering Team. Please discuss with your Chef and Front of House Manager after you have arrived. You can also create your own personal food diary using our state of the art website.

  8. When are the meal times in halls?

    Meal services take lecture times into account and can vary slightly between dining halls. Approximate serving times are:

    Breakfast 8am – 8.45am. Late Continental Breakfast 8.45am – 9.30am.
    Lunch 12.00pm – 1.30pm. Dinner 5.00pm – 6.30pm.

    Weekends only:

    Brunch 11.30am – 1pm. Evening Meal 4.45pm – 6pm.
