The Teaching Observation Scheme is one of the ways in which the University seeks to maintain quality and standards in teaching. Formal observation of teaching also offers an important opportunity for critical dialogue and reflection on practice.
Colleagues within the following categories are required to have their practical teaching formally assessed by a University Assessor:
- Academics completing the final year of the New Lecturers’ Route/Course (NLR/NLC) as part of their probationary requirements
- Members of staff undertaking the Associate Teaching Route/Course (ATR/ATC)
- Bought-in Teachers undertaking a substantial amount of teaching within a module
- Academics seeking promotion to Senior Lecturer.
For further information contact Jo Wilkins, who holds responsibility for organising all formal teaching observations.
All formal teaching observations are to be recorded on the standard University Teaching Observation Report Form. For University teaching standards to be met the session must be graded as 'Satisfactory' or above.
Further g uidance is provided in Observation of Teaching: A Handbook for University Assessors.

Formative observations
In addition to the formal observations arranged through the Teaching Observation Scheme, the New Lecturers' Route and Associate Teaching Route also involve formative observations earlier in the course. These should be arranged informally between the candidate and the Probationary Adviser or Associate Adviser, as appropriate.
These observations also use the standard University Teaching Observation Report Form.
For guidance on undertaking departmental teaching observations, please see: Observation of Teaching: Guidance Notes for Formative Observations.
