Information for research staff
The University provides three progressive opportunities for research staff to build their competence in teaching: Teaching Skills, STARs (Successful Teaching and Assessment for Researchers) and ATC (Associate Teaching Course).
Teaching Skills
The Teaching Skills courses provided by the Graduate School give you a basic grounding in teaching skills. You follow one of two versions, either "Teaching Skills for those Supervising Practical Activities" or "Teaching Skills for those Working with Small Groups". Each course consists of three half-day workshops.
For more information, see "Postgraduate Research Students Training" upcoming activities in the Staff Development online booking system.
Successful Teaching and Assessment for Researchers (STARs)
STARs is aimed at research staff and research students who have done some teaching skills training and are doing some teaching. This semester-long programme requires attendance at three workshops and culminates in reflective presentations by participants. It provides you with a chance to build on "Teaching Skills" (see above), an introduction to reflective practice, and a lead-in to the ATC (see below).
Workshops include:
- Planning and Designing for Teaching
- Teaching Small Groups
- Assessment and Feedback for Learning

Associate Teaching Course (ATC)
ATC caters for research staff (and others) with regular or substantial teaching duties. It typically takes 18 months to complete. Those who do complete are eligible to become an Associate Fello of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA). Participants are normally required to:
- Attend six workshops
- Meet regularly with an Associate Adviser
- Undergo two observations of their teaching
- Write one reflective commentary
- Compile a teaching portfolio
For research staff with substantial teaching duties there is an opportunity to do the ATC via a unit-based approach involving two units of the New Lecturers' Course.
