About the Teaching Centre

The Teaching Centre was established, in accordance with the University's Strategic Plan ‘Towards 2016’, to support colleagues in their teaching roles.

The Teaching Centre is primarily a resource for academic colleagues in their teaching role. The Centre seeks to support the professional development needs of academic staff and to foster and promote effective practice in relation to learning, teaching and assessment. We also provide professional development support for other staff whose role encompasses learning and teaching responsibilities.

We will work closely with Departments to support development and innovation in learning and teaching practice, including the sharing of effective practice. We will also work collaboratively with other University centres and groups with a common interest in learning and teaching development.

What we do

We design, manage and deliver the New Lecturers' Course and (previously) the New Lecturers' Route, and the Associate Teaching Course, which support teaching staff throughout the University and are accredited by the Higher Education Academy.

We provide advice to, and undertake teaching related assessments for, colleagues seeking Promotion to Senior Lecturer, manage the University's Teaching Observation Scheme and coordinate the work undertaken by University Assessors in support of teaching assessments.

We work closely with departments in the area of Teaching Enhancement and Innovation, aiming to identify and promote the sharing of effective practice. We offer Support for Departments through bespoke provision and delivery of a range of workshops to support the continuing professional development needs of staff.

We undertake Quality Enhancement Projects at University and Departmental level and seek to foster Networks and Communities of Interest. We provide guidance on developments linked to Distance Learning and advise departments on the use of Personal Development Planning with students.

We manage the University’s Teaching Awards Scheme.
