Research Staff

Staff Development Courses

Our provision is currently being developed to provide a more coherent and supportive programme to meet the particular needs of research staff. We welcome suggestions.

Loughborough research staff vary in experience from newly postgraduate research assistants to highly experienced postdoctoral staff. Within the integrated programme provided through Staff Development, you should find generic skills workshops appropriate to your level of expertise and your development needs.

N.B. Always read the Event Details carefully to check whether you fall into the group that the workshop caters for.

New research staff

The workshop Introduction for New Research Staff provides a targeted induction for research staff throughout the University. It complements both the generic University Orientation day and the specific department and/or research group induction procedures.

Less experienced researchers

Less experienced researchers will find that many workshops listed under Postgraduate Research Students Training are suitable.

Postdoctoral and experienced research staff

Postdoctoral and more experienced research staff will find appropriate workshops under the Research listing. These workshops are aimed at both academic and research staff.

Teaching skills for PGRs and RAs

This consists of three sessions: two compulsory (Preparing to Teach and Promoting Learning) plus either Supervising Practical Activities or Working with Small Groups. (N.B. These sessions are in great demand so book as early as you can.)

Having completed the Teaching Skills course, you can attend some of the more advanced workshops listed under Learning and Teaching, including participating in the 'Successful Teaching and Assessment for Research Staff course. Please check the entry requirements and if necessary contact the presenter to ensure that the workshop is appropriate for you.

Successful Teaching and Assessment for Research Staff

Designed with research staff in mind, and to be completed in one semester, STARS requires participants to undertake three specific workshops, with reflections on each workshop on Learn (the University's Virtual Learning Environment). The final part of STARS is an assessment day where participants present a short talk and peer assess other STARS participants.

Pre-requisite: completion of the Teaching Skills for PGRs and RAs workshops, or equivalent (subject to approval).

Workshops: Planning and Designing for Occasional Teaching, Teaching Small Groups, Marking for PGRs and RAs (or Feedback and Assessment).

Next Assessment Day 19th March 2010.

Participants who successfully complete STARS receive a certificate of completion and is a lead in to the Teaching Centre's Associate Teaching Course. For further information visit the Teaching Centre website
