Medal Makers creating a lasting legacy for volunteers

Loughborough University’s Olympic-inspired volunteering programme got off to a great start with an induction weekend that involved over 300 volunteers.

The Medal Makers programme was designed to help provide the ultimate environment for Olympic success at Loughborough and create a lasting legacy to inspire volunteering and involvement as part of the London 2012 Games.

It has recruited participants from across the local area, including students, staff, alumni and members of the wider community, to support the Official Team GB Preparation Camp headquarters and Japanese Olympic athletes being held at the University over the summer period.

The programme was kick started with a celebratory induction weekend, where volunteers registered, attended presentations and talks, and participated in specific training for their designated roles. These cover a variety of responsibilities, including security, sports venue support, IT support and customer service positions.

Ben Aherne, Business Development Manager for Sports Development Centre, said:
“It was fantastic to see so many Medal Makers attending the training days and the level of enthusiasm was unprecedented.  The range of skills, ages and interests from our volunteers was so varied but with one single common goal - to give Team GB and Japanese Olympic athletes the best preparation ahead of London 2012.”

The Medal Makers programme has been recognised by a number of awards for its dedication to inspiring volunteering within Loughborough University and its local area in light of the London 2012 Games.

The project has been awarded the London 2012 Inspire mark for helping to deliver the Games’ lasting legacy. It has also been recognised with a bronze award by the inaugural Podium Awards, the further and higher education unit for the 2012 Games, as an Invaluable Volunteering Project.
