Paul Morrell presents Dr Jacqui Glass with the award

Loughborough University’s School of Civil and Building Engineering has beaten off tough competition from major global companies to win a prestigious sustainability award.

The British Precast Associate Member Sustainability Champion 2012 Award recognises an outstanding contribution to sustainability activities in the construction products industry.  It is open to all 100 associate members of British Precast.

The School of Civil and Building Engineering won the award in recognition of its work in the field of responsible sourcing for the construction sector.  Responsible sourcing is the selection of products and materials from companies with certified management systems and ethical sourcing practices – an important part of sustainable construction.

In 2010 the School established the APRES (Action Programme on Responsible Sourcing) network to bring together academic experts and industry specialists to share knowledge and develop new ideas in this area.  The network, which is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), held its inaugural conference in November.

The University’s Dr Jacqui Glass was presented with the award by Paul Morrell, the UK’s Chief Construction Officer, at the British Precast annual industry awards event.

Dr Glass said: “This award certainly recognises the extensive engagement that Loughborough has had with industry since 2010 on this important issue.  I would like to thank all the APRES members – these are leading industry organisations that are at the forefront of this agenda; they have offered unswerving support for our work and we are very grateful for their on-going contribution.”

Martin Clarke, the Chief Executive of British Precast added: “We have very strong ties with Loughborough and great respect for the research that goes on in the School of Civil and Building Engineering.  This work has made a powerful contribution to our sustainability initiatives over the past decade.  We feel that this is well deserved recognition for a longstanding and highly worthwhile academic-industry relationship.”
