Loughborough University’s campus has become the focus of a series of poems written by landscape poet Mark Goodwin in collaboration with students and lecturers from the University’s Department of English and Drama.

The poems, which are based on the geography, history and aesthetics of the campus, will be showcased at an open event on Thursday 24 May. They will be read by poet in residence Mark Goodwin, and students, lecturers and other special guests involved in the project.

Established as one of the foremost landscape poets working today, Mark Goodwin has been working with the Department of English and Drama to produce a poetic mapping of the campus, focusing on the natural and built landscape of the University.

Their work has been recorded in a blog, found at www.poeticsofacampus.wordpress.com.
Mark Goodwin’s residency was funded by the Loughborough Fund, which is managed by the University’s Development and Alumni Office.

Kerry Featherstone, lecturer in Creative Writing and organiser of the project, said:

“Working with Mark Goodwin has given our students a fantastic opportunity to develop their own poetry, and we hope to be able to support similar projects in the future so even more students get the chance to work with quality writers like Mark.

“We hope the audience of this unique showcase will see Loughborough’s famous campus in a new light after hearing the poems.”

The event takes place in the University’s Martin Hall from 7pm on Thursday 24 May.

Tickets cost £5 for staff and the general public, while the event is free for students. Places are limited, and those wishing to attend should contact Helen Relf on 01509 222967 or by emailing H.L.Relf@lboro.ac.uk.
