Loughborough students Peter Murdoch and Laura Scott have scooped top prizes at the TARGETjobs Undergraduate of the Year awards 2012.

History and International Relations student Laura Scott was crowned Social Sciences Undergraduate of the Year, while Peter Murdoch, who studies Accounting and Financial Management, won the Business and Finance Undergraduate of the Year award.

The ceremony consisted of 12 award categories spanning across the various subject areas, and offered the winners exclusive placement and internship opportunities with some of the UK's top graduate recruiters that sponsored the individual awards.

With over 5,000 applicants, entrants had to pass a number of complex challenges, which included assessments and interviews by the individual sponsors.

Laura and Peter were two out of four Loughborough University students shortlisted for awards.

Laura Scott was awarded a ten-week summer internship with the Royal Bank of Scotland Group, who sponsored the Social Sciences Undergraduate of the Year award.

Speaking about the award she said: “I was very flattered, and very pleasantly surprised. It was great to experience the assessment centres and what it was like to go through the interview process. I particularly enjoyed being at the awards ceremony in Canary Wharf and having the chance to network with other people.”

School of Business and Economics student Peter Murdoch has won a summer placement with sponsor Morgan Stanley, a leading global financial services firm. It includes the chance to spend a week working at their New York headquarters, all expenses paid.

“The application process has been incredibly long and detailed, but it was 100% worth it,” Peter said. “I’m really interested in the placement with Morgan Stanley and just through this award I’ve met loads of interesting people.

“It’s a really good feeling to win the award, and a fantastic opportunity. With so many candidates that have some phenomenal experience, I feel highly honoured to be considered as one of the top undergraduates of the year.”

Gill Clarke, Careers Adviser from the Careers and Employability Centre at Loughborough University said, “"On behalf of the University, I was proud to witness them collect their awards, having been selected from amongst the most talented students in the UK.

“Their achievements demonstrate the effort and hard work that they have put in for their success, as well as the University’s on-going commitment to ensure our students have the best opportunity for securing employment upon graduating.”
