Loughborough University welcomes the Olympic Torch Relay

Loughborough University students have participated in the test event for the Olympic Torch Relay.

The event was also attended by LOCOG Chair Lord Sebastian Coe, who returned to his former University to see first-hand the Torch Relay in action.

The Leicester to Peterborough stretch of the Relay route was chosen for the test event as it represented a typical day, including both rural and city locations and the use of alternative modes of transport. The event was also used by the organisers to test operational elements.

The Torch Relay convoy arrived on campus on time at 9.24 am, and went on the running track of the athletics centre, up University Road past the Pilkington Library, alongside Burleigh Court and through the new Loughborough University stadium.

Lord Sebastian Coe was at the Sir Denis Rooke building to welcome the Torch, describing it as ‘a lovely moment’ to have the Relay visit his former University.  He went on to say:

“It is close to my own heart. Much of what I did in track and field that defined my life was done here on this campus…It is fantastic to be here at the world’s most famous sporting university.”

The Torch is being carried by 122 participants, including students from Universities and Colleges in the East Midlands. The opportunity was set up by Podium, the Higher and Further Education Unit for the 2012 Games.

Loughborough University student Rachel Arnold was one of the participants to carry the Torch.  Rachel ran through campus from Burleigh Court and into the stadium.

Speaking of her experience Rachel said:

“Being part of the dress rehearsal has been absolutely fantastic, and to be able to carry the torch through Loughborough University is the icing on the cake.  I have been an undergraduate, masters and now a PhD student at Loughborough, spending the last seven years of my life at the campus with so many happy experiences.  I am so proud to have been able to play a part in the University’s Olympic journey.”

Adam Rae, Athletic Union President at the Loughborough Students’ Union was also a participant, running from the Sir Denis Rooke building to the Sports Technology Institute.

Adam said about the event:

“It was a fantastic experience and a great opportunity to be part of the test event. We know that this will gain momentum and be even bigger come the summer.  It was also superb that so many students from Loughborough and the wider region have been given the opportunity to participate today.”

Starting on 19 May, the Olympic Torch Relay will travel around 8,000 miles around the UK. It will return to Loughborough University on Tuesday 3 July, day 46 of the Relay.
