Loughborough University welcomes ICE President

Richard Coackley, President of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE)

The President of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) will be visiting Loughborough University on Friday.

Richard Coackley will be addressing a group of civil engineering students on ‘harnessing the energy’, the theme for his presidential year.  The presentation will focus on three areas: harnessing new sources of sustainable energy from natural resources; harnessing the skills and talent of the UK’s engineers and future engineers; and harnessing the energy of the ICE’s partnerships with industry and Government.

Speaking about the visit Professor Tony Thorpe, Dean of the School, said: “We are delighted to welcome the ICE President to Loughborough and showcase our talented students.  They are the civil engineers of the future and this is a great opportunity for them to meet someone who has extensive experience of the industry.”

ICE President Richard Coackley added: “Nurturing our young engineers and future engineers is vital to the success of the industry and also to the future prosperity of the UK as this generation of engineers will not only work on major infrastructure projects in the future but also plan them.

“I am delighted to have the opportunity to address the students at Loughborough University and proud that my President’s Apprentice, Sebastian John, who graduated from the University in 2009 will accompany me on the visit.”

Loughborough’s School of Civil and Building Engineering is part of the largest collection of multi-disciplinary engineering schools in the UK.  It has extensive links with industry, with many of its students being sponsored by major construction organisations.
