Tickets on sale to see the Barbarians - coached by Loughborough graduate
Scotland's coach Andy Robinson has accepted an invitation to take charge of the Barbarians' squad that plays Loughborough Students on Wednesday 9 May.
The special match is to celebrate the new Loughborough University stadium, situated on the West end of campus. The match will kick off at 7.30pm.
Robinson was a graduate of Loughborough University and led the side to victory in the final of the UAU Championships in 1986.
He also played 11 times for the Barbarians, including the match against Australia in 1988 and overseas tours to Russia and Japan.
Andy Robinson said:
“I'm delighted to accept the invitation to coach the Barbarians in their match against Loughborough Students next month. I have many happy memories of my time at Loughborough and two of my sons, Olly and Eddy, are students there at the present.”
Welcoming the appointment, Barbarians' president Micky Steele-Bodger said:
“It is an absolute privilege for us to have Andy Robinson back with the Barbarians again. He captained the club on three occasions in his playing days and was the ideal leader when we took a squad on tour to Japan in 1996. At the same time we are very conscious of his links with Loughborough and we were very keen for him to be part of a special occasion next month.”
Loughborough Students have enjoyed a successful season and are already crowned champions of National Two North in the English leagues. Next season they will play in National League One, effectively one of the top forty clubs in England.
Head Coach David Morris said:
“We are delighted that the Barbarians have agreed to play us as part of the official opening of the newly built University Stadium. The brand of rugby on show should be electric with both sides renown for running rugby. It is also very special for the university to have alumni and former Loughborough Students player Andy Robinson to coach the Barbarians side.
“The student and local community support for the team this season has been key in us winning National Two North this season, it really is recognised and appreciated by the players on the field. I hope we can stage a great rugby evening and welcome local rugby supporters and students to the new stadium.”
