UK and Japanese experts unite to find smart solutions to global warming

Experts from Japan and the UK will meet at Loughborough University next month to discuss the use of “smart” approaches to make our cities greener.

The Smart Energy Cities conference takes place at Loughborough’s Sir Denis Rooke centre on Tuesday, April 17 and Wednesday, April 18.

Over the two days, academics specialising in technologies designed to make cities more environmentally friendly will network, collaborate and share knowledge.

They will discuss novel ways to make transport, buildings and energy generation more sustainable.

Cities use 80% of global energy, and contribute over half our greenhouse gas emissions.  Reducing city energy consumption is therefore vital and “smart” approaches to reducing energy demands, as well as ‘’smart’’ supply and distribution techniques, could provide the solution.

This event will share understanding of Japanese and UK perspectives on smart energy cities and establish research linkages.

A full programme of distinguished speakers include the Director General of NEDO Europe Mr Yoichi Iida, who will discuss smart energy systems in the context of Japan, while Richard Knight, of the Energy Technologies Institute, will provide a UK perspective.

Academics from Loughborough, Nottingham, Birmingham, Kyushu, Waseda, Osaka, Nagoya and Kansai Universities will also contribute.
