A Loughborough University conference focussing on the importance of sustainability in the concrete construction sector has attracted international speakers.

The event is being organised by the University’s School of Civil and Building Engineering and the UK Sustainable Concrete Forum, which represents the leading materials companies in the UK.

Speakers confirmed for the conference include Professor Koji Sakai from Kagawa University in Japan, an eminent expert on concrete and sustainability, and Dr Philippe Fonta of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.  Cemex, Lafarge, Constructing Excellence and the Architect’s Journal will also be contributing to the event.

Loughborough’s Dr Jacqueline Glass said: “We are delighted to host this important conference at the University.  Highlights will include talks on London Olympic Games projects and the concrete industry’s sustainability strategy for the coming years.”

Martin Clarke, Chief Executive of British Precast, who is hosting Professor Sakai’s visit, added: “We have been working in collaboration with Loughborough University since 2003 on various sustainability projects and see this event as a fantastic opportunity to bring industry and academics together to talk about an important topic for our sector.

“Our built environment relies on concrete to provide homes, workplaces, transport systems and protection from the elements, so it is a strategically important material.  We are committed to using concrete to make these structures and facilities as sustainable as possible and that means better understanding our environmental and other impacts.”

The conference – ‘Facing the challenge – Global and UK progress in achieving sustainable concrete construction’ – will be held on Wednesday 16 May from 1pm.  To book a place please email scforum2012@lboro.ac.uk stating the number of seats required and names of those attending.  There are also a limited number of stand spaces available for companies wishing to exhibit at the conference.
