University joins Big Bang Fair celebrations

Loughborough University is taking part in the national Big Bang Fair to demonstrate to young people from across the country how good design and technology can support people as they age.

Academics from the Loughborough Design School have joined forces with the Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (IEHF) to create a stand for the event, which is the largest celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths for young people in the UK.

The fair is the flagship event for National Science and Engineering Week, for which the University hosts a number of events on campus.  This year the fair is being held at the Birmingham NEC from March 15 – 17 and more than 35,000 young people are expected to attend.

The joint Loughborough and IEHF interactive stand will be entitled ‘Well old is well ‘ard’’, and will focus on the theme of designing for an ageing society.  It will incorporate three activities that will all show youngsters how everyday tasks become more challenging as you get older.

The star attraction will be a Scalextric racing game where visitors will get the chance to steer a model racing car round a track first as themselves and then, with the help of ageing devices, as someone much older.  The aim is to demonstrate how the needs of users differ and the impact on older people when their design needs are not taken into account.

Ergonomist Laurence Clift from the Loughborough Design School is leading the University’s involvement in the event.  He said: “We are really excited to be taking part in the Big Bang Fair.  It is an excellent opportunity to show young people what a big difference good design can make to people’s lives, and to encourage them to pursue a career in ergonomics.”

Amanda Bellamy from the IEHF added: “The Design School ergonomists have designed and created some brilliant activities and ones that will convey how relevant and important ergonomics is today, particularly to older people.”
