Loughborough University and Department of Computer Science student Lillian Hiscox has been named ‘Best Placement Student’ at a national awards ceremony in recognition of her work at Microsoft.

The 2012 National Placement and Internship Awards are organised by RateMyPlacement, an enterprise initiative set up by Loughborough University graduates in 2007.  They aim to showcase the outstanding achievements of all stakeholders involved in undergraduate placements and internships.

Lillian, who is currently in her fourth and final year studying Information Technology Management for Business, spent last year working with Microsoft as an Account Technical Strategist.

During her time there she was responsible for finding sale opportunities of new revenue to help her reach the set sales quota, spotting client opportunities and building relationships within businesses to help them meet their objectives and priorities using Microsoft technology.

“It was a very challenging role and didn’t seem like a usual internship,” Lillian explains. “I think from day one I was sort of pushed into opportunities and challenges. I loved it.”

With Microsoft’s support and trust in her ability, she was able to take on big projects and gain extensive experience.

“Within my first three months I was given a customer. I managed to spot a good opportunity and turn it round into a multi-million pound contract which was quite exciting. It was a great learning experience. Coming back for my final year I can now apply what I learnt in a completely different way to before my placement. Now I know a lot more about how it actually happens in a working environment and can apply it my course.”

The Best Student Placement Award celebrates the amazing contribution that students make to businesses across the UK and abroad. Lillian was nominated for the award by her Graduate Recruitment Manager at Microsoft.

She added: “It’s amazing to win this award. I was pretty shocked and quite flattered that my department thought I was worthy of it. It was also great that I could give something back to my manager and my team as a reflection of their investment and time in me. Without their support and willingness to open up opportunities for me I wouldn’t have been able to do what I did.”

Lillian will return to Microsoft after graduation this year, having successfully attained a place on their graduate scheme.
