World leading climate change expert to speak at Loughborough University

Sir John Houghton CBE FRS

A unique opportunity to hear a guest lecture by an internationally acclaimed climate change expert is on offer at Loughborough University.

The annual Sir Nevill Mott public lecture is part of the University’s National Science and Engineering Week (NSEW) programme of activities.  Taking place on Wednesday 14 March, this year the lecture will be given by the esteemed scientist Sir John Houghton CBE FRS.

Sir John was Professor of Atmospheric Physics at Oxford University before joining the Meteorological Office as its Director General, and later Chief Executive.  In 1988 on the formation of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), he was appointed chairman of its Scientific Assessment working group.  The IPCC and Al Gore were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 for their efforts in raising awareness about man-made climate change.  Today Sir John is chairman of the John Ray Initiative, an organisation ‘connecting environment, science and Christianity’.

Jackie Baseley, the University’s NSEW coordinator, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to hear one of the country’s top climate change scientists speak.  Sir John has worked at the highest level and his knowledge on man-made climate change and its impact on the earth is second to none.  We are incredibly honoured that he has agreed to give this year’s Sir Nevill Mott lecture.”

The lecture, which is hosted by the Department of Physics, is free to attend and all are welcome, however an understanding of physics principles is recommended.  No booking is required.  The lecture is being held on campus in the Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, room T003 from 5.15 – 6.15pm.
