A number of Loughborough students have helped the Great Britain women’s hockey team make history, by reaching their first ever FIH Champions Trophy final.

The Team GB squad included current Loughborough Students’ hockey club player Laura Unsworth, University graduate Hannah MacLeod, and Loughborough College student Nicola White.

Great Britain reached the final following a fine performance in the quarter final beating Korea 4-1 and a dominant display against Germany to win the semi-final 2-0.

However in the final they came up against the World Champions Argentina, who also had home advantage, with the tournament being played in Rosario.

In a close fought match a single penalty corner strike by Silvina D’Elia late in the first half gave Argentina a 1-0 victory, and meant Great Britain’s women collected the silver medal.

Despite losing by the narrowest of margins, the result represents Great Britain’s best ever finish in a World level event and comes just under six months before the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The women’s team is coached by University graduate, Danny Kerry, whose first steps into coaching was as the captain of the Loughborough Students Men's 1st XI.

After the match Danny Kerry said:

“I thought Argentina played very well tonight.  They defended well, they didn’t create too many opportunities and their defence held out.  We started to get back into it in the second half but it wasn’t to be.

“We won four, drew one and lost just one in a major world level tournament.  We’ve made history tonight winning the silver medal.”

The Champions Trophy is an annual tournament, which brings together eight of the best teams in the world.  England won the bronze medal in 2010 when the event was held in Nottingham.

Andy Borrie, Deputy Director of Sport at Loughborough University and an Independent Director of Great Britain Hockey, said:

“I am delighted for the team that the Champions Trophy was so successful. It is a fantastic result on the road to London. Both women’s and men’s teams are looking good in the lead up to the Olympics and it’s wonderful to see so many Loughborough students and alums playing key roles in Team GB’s success.”

The Champions Trophy is the first of three major tournaments for Great Britain ahead of the Olympic Games in London.

From 2-6 May, Great Britain will play in the Olympic Test Event and just seven weeks before London 2012, Great Britain will host some of the best teams in the world at the Investec London Cup in Chiswick.
