Sir Peter Bonfield appointed as Loughborough’s Chair of Council

Sir Peter Bonfield CBE FREng, a leading international business executive, has taken up the role of Chair of Council and Senior Pro-Chancellor at Loughborough University. He succeeds Sir Bryan Carsberg, who held the post for ten years.

Sir Peter has over 45 years’ experience in the fields of electronics, computers and communications. He began his career with Texas Instruments in the USA and, after various design, manufacturing and management roles, joined computer company ICL plc in 1981, where he rose to become Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

In 1996 Sir Peter was appointed as CEO and Chairman of the Executive Committee of British Telecommuncations plc, where he served until early 2002. During his tenure, BT was the world's fifth largest telecommunications company, employing over 130,000 people.

Sir Peter's career has included non-executive roles at a number of successful businesses, including AstraZeneca PLC.

Currently, Sir Peter manages a diverse international portfolio of appointments, including Chairmanship of the Board of NXP Semiconductors NV (NASDAQ: NXPI) in The Netherlands, and Board Directorships with Tokyo-based Sony Corporation, LM Ericsson in Sweden, Taiwan’s TSMC and Oregon-based Mentor Graphics Corporation Inc in America.  He is Advisor to Apax Partners LLP, Senior Advisor to N M Rothschild, both in London, and Board Mentor at CMi in Belgium.  He is also Advisor to Longreach LLP in Hong Kong and NVP LLP in New Jersey. 

Sir Peter is a Fellow of several professional bodies, including the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Institution of Engineering and Technology, and the Royal Society of Arts.  He holds an honours degree in Engineering from Loughborough.

I am sure that under his chairmanship the University will continue to go from strength to strength.”
