International handball makes a welcome return to Loughborough

With less than 200 days to go to the start of the London 2012 Games, there is an opportunity to watch one of the most exciting Olympic sports at Loughborough University on 22 March.

The Great Britain women’s handball team will be visiting the University to play Poland in a qualifier for the 2012 European Championships in the Sir David Wallace Sports Hall.

With the 2012 Games just around the corner, this is a great opportunity to see aspiring Olympians competing in one of the fastest growing sports in the UK.

Great Britain and Poland have both lost their first two matches against former World Champions Russia and Montenegro, so both will be keen to bounce back with two victories to keep their hopes of reaching the finals of the European Championships alive.

The home fixture will also provide Team GB with the opportunity to build a head start before they travel to Poland for the return leg just a few days later on 25 March.

Lorraine Brown, Performance Director at British Handball said:

“These matches against Poland are crucial for us, as they form an important part of our preparations for the Olympic Games in London this summer. We have had close games against them in the past, and know they are a tough team against whom will have to play at our best to gain our first win against them.”

“The team has made fantastic progress over the last few years and already have a number of international victories to their name. Hopefully we will shortly be adding Poland to that list!”

The fixture will also provide the women’s squad with the opportunity to spend time at the University, which is the official preparation camp headquarters for Team GB and Japan in the build up to the London 2012 Games.

Chris Earle, Director of Sport at Loughborough University said:

“I am delighted that international handball is returning to Loughborough University and that the women’s squad will have the opportunity to sample our excellent facilities on campus, as part of their preparation for London 2012.

“I hope that our staff and students, alongside members of the local community and handball fans take the opportunity to watch an up-and-coming, fast-paced sport played at its highest level.”

The match takes place on Thursday 22 March and starts at 2pm.

Tickets are free for school children, and being an afternoon match is ideal for schools to bring their pupils to see international handball action. Adult tickets are priced at £5, while concessions are £3.50 and students are £2.50.
