Waste not, want not – new Loughborough project set to boost resource efficiency

A new project to boost recycling and create a greater public understanding of resource efficiency has been launched at Loughborough University.

With the UK's rate of recycling of municipal waste still ranked only 11th in Europe and growing pressure to address material scarcity, there is strong evidence that there needs to be greater public and business engagement in resource efficiency.

The ‘CORE: Creative outreach for resource efficiency’ project – funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) – will meet this need by developing a creative outreach programme.

Using pop-up labs, podcasts, hands-on demonstrations and school events, the research team will encourage people to think more about resource efficiency and hammer home the ‘waste not, want not’ message.

The project is being led by Professor Jacqui Glass from the University’s School of Civil and Building Engineering, in collaboration with the Universities of Cranfield, Edinburgh, Leeds, Manchester, Surrey and Warwick.

“This project is a unique and fascinating opportunity to build bridges between scientists, engineers and the public, engaging real people in real conversations about the incredibly important topic of resource efficiency,” Professor Glass explains.  “The team has in mind some novel ideas for public engagement and we are looking forward to putting them into practice in various locations around the UK.”

CORE is one of four green engineering projects to receive a share of £5 million funding from the EPSRC.  Part of its remit will also be to help the other research teams to communicate their findings to the public, policymakers and industry.
