Loughborough University graduate Becky White is delighted that her company, onesixeight: fitness, was named Small Business of the Year at the inaugural Oak FM’s Pride of Loughborough Awards sponsored by East Midlands Airport.

The Awards, held on Friday 23 November at the Radisson BLU East Midlands Airport hotel, celebrate the achievements of local businesses and community initiatives with 14 categories recognising both individuals and organisations as well as the town's best carer, student and young achiever.

Becky beat off stiff competition from other small local companies, impressing the judges with the success of onesixeight: fitness, the health and exercise venture she launched in February 2010 while still a student at the University.

onesixeight: fitness offers personal training – both one-to-one and online – nutrition advice, health and fitness MOTs, and exercise classes as well as beginners’ running sessions.

Becky – whose philosophy is to make exercise fun – masterminded a world record breaking bounceathon on campus earlier this year as part of the University’s celebration of the Olympic Games. Along with 301 staff, students and supporters, she hopes to have bounced her way into the Guinness Book of Records for the most people jumping simultaneously on trampolines.

This year has also seen her achieve her “Fitness 10,000” goal of helping 10,000 people get fit by the start of the Games.

She is obviously thrilled with the Award: “I didn’t think this year could get any better. I’ve achieved my goal of helping 10,000 people to get fit, organised a world record breaking event, and volunteered at the Olympics. Having all of that acknowledged by winning this award – I’m absolutely over the moon!”

Professor Steve Rothberg, Pro Vice Chancellor for Enterprise at Loughborough University says: "Becky has achieved a great deal and built a promising local business – we are very proud of her success. This award is richly deserved – she has worked extremely hard and I wish her every success for the future.”

Also honoured on the night were Team GB hockey players, Nicola White and Loughborough University’s Laura Unsworth, who jointly received a Special Award.

The University is proud to have sponsored the Awards’ Green Business of the Year category. Professor Jim Saker from the University’s School of Business and Economics presented the award to Sileby-based winners, Complete Wasters @ The Green Place.
