Loughborough Students Tennis crowned European Champions

Student Tennis - European Champions

Loughborough Students Tennis - 2012 European Champions.

Loughborough Students are the Champions of Europe for the second time in four years after winning the European Collegiate Tennis Association Finals.

Last time the team won the finals back in 2009 they became the first UK University to win the European title.

Captained by third year student Scott Whitbread, the 2012 team beat the German Sports University of Cologne in the final to claim a famous victory at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton.

Loughborough started the event strongly, beating second seeds Stirling University 4-2 to qualify for the semi-finals. This result was followed up with a comprehensive 5-1 victory over DCU Dublin to put the team into the final.

However Cologne were going to be tricky opponents after they had knocked out top seeds Durham in the semi-finals.

After opening singles’ victories from Myles O’Meally and Lucas Poelman Loughborough were in a healthy 2-0 lead.

Defeat for Tristan Farron-Mahon in a hard fought encounter and victory for Scott Whitbread made the match score 3-1. Loughborough were now only one match away from the title.

Cologne won the first doubles match and went into the second looking to tie the match.  But the pairing of Whitbread and Farron-Mahon pulled through to claim game, set, match and the European title for Loughborough.

The team also included players Charlie Regis, and Dave Scales who said:

“It was a big achievement and I’m proud to be part of the team that can call themselves European Champions.  It was an honour to represent Loughborough at this event.  We always knew it was going to be tough but we just gave it our all.”

The result was not only a tremendous performance by the players, but also from the team’s new Head Coach, Tom Kisiel, who has only been in post for three months.

Speaking after the event Loughborough Students Tennis Head Coach Tom Kisiel said:

“I feel very proud to have coached Loughborough to European glory and was pleased with the team spirit they showed throughout the weekend.”

Held as an invitational event, the European Collegiate Tennis Association brings together the best university teams from across Europe to compete against one another, to provide players with the opportunity to play both in a team and in an individual environment across many different countries.
