European construction sector to benefit from Loughborough University’s ground-breaking research

Loughborough University will be utilising the ground-breaking research carried out by its Innovative Manufacturing and Construction Research Centre (IMCRC) to support European Construction Institute (ECI) members.

The IMCRC completed its 10-year programme of research in 2011. During that time academics worked with 200 construction-sector organisations, large and small, to develop new product and process technologies, decision-making guidelines, models, support tools, handbooks and strategies. The centre was funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

Now the School of Civil and Building Engineering has secured funding from the University’s Knowledge Transfer Account - which was also funded by the EPSRC - to further utilise the IMCRC’s research findings, by matching the industry needs of ECI partners with any relevant IMCRC projects.  ECI members include major construction companies, contractors, specialists and support organisations interested in the management of key construction projects.

A team, led by Loughborough’s Professor Patricia Carrillo, will be working with the ECI to identify suitable matches.  To achieve this they will be hosting workshops, a web-based knowledge repository and one-to-one tailored knowledge packages.  The team will also participate in regular ECI events, including its annual conference in April.

Professor Carrillo said: “This is a great opportunity for ECI members and IMCRC researchers to identify together how the findings of the Centre's leading-edge construction research can be turned to industrial advantage.  The resulting relationships could culminate in a wide range of outcomes, from implementation of new technological or management processes, to the pursuit of new collaborative research projects.”
