Loughborough experts to lead international debate on the safe movement of patients

Safe Movement

Reducing risk and preventing workplace injuries when moving patients will be the focus of an international seminar taking place at Loughborough University in September.

The event is being led by Drs Mike Fray and Sue Hignett from the University’s Design School.  Both are world renowned for their application of ergonomics to the movement of people in the healthcare environment.

Taking place from September 16-19, the meeting is being sponsored by Arjo-Huntleigh ab and facilitated by Opencity.  It will include invited representatives from across the UK, the USA, Finland, Germany, France, Holland and Italy.

The aim of the event is to discuss a recently released ISO technical report.  This provides guidance for assessing the problems and risks associated with patient handling, and for identifying and applying ergonomic strategies to those problems and risks.

Speaking about the meeting Dr Fray said: “We want to use this event to develop better national and international guidance for people working in the healthcare sector.  It is also a great opportunity to look at ways we can all work together to share knowledge and best practice.

“Ultimately this event could have a significant effect in reducing the risk of healthcare workers suffering from musculoskeletal injuries across the globe.”

Since 1997 Dr Fray has led Loughborough University’s postgraduate ergonomics education programme for the handling of people, which is recognised as the most developed programme in the world.
