Funding boost for Loughborough University’s disability sport experts

With the end of the 2012 London Olympic Games and attention turning to the Paralympic Games Loughborough University’s Peter Harrison Centre for Disability Sport (PHC) has received a funding boost.

A new grant of £600,000 from the Peter Harrison Foundation has been announced which will enable the centre to continue its pioneering work in the area of disability sport.  The new funding will allow the centre to work with Paralympic athletes after London 2012 into the next Paralympic cycle for Rio 2016 and address the health agenda of promoting exercise for persons with a disability.

Dr Vicky Tolfrey, PHC Director, commented “We are extremely grateful for the continuing support from the Peter Harrison Foundation which will enable a legacy of disability sport to remain at Loughborough.”

The Peter Harrison Centre is the only one of its kind in the UK.  It was formally established in 2005 with a grant from the Peter Harrison Foundation.  Its mission is to improve knowledge about Paralympic sport and to promote the substantial health and quality of life benefits that can be gained through participation in disability sports.

The centre is heavily involved in research at both an elite performance and rehabilitative level, in addition to providing sport science support to a number of GB squads.  Recently they have worked with the GB Goalball team and the GB wheelchair basketball and rugby squads. The centre also works closely with a number of National and International partners and collaborators to achieve the centres key aims and objectives.

The Centre currently has 24 members of staff across three main research strands: Health and Well-being; Sport Culture and Policy and Sport Science.
