Loughborough graduate a triple winner at national Design Awards

Hugh Leader-Williams

School of Art’s graduate Hugh Leader-Williams scooped up three awards at the prestigious graduate exhibition, New Designers 2012 for his furniture design.

Hugh, who graduated from Loughborough this year, was awarded the 100% Design Award, the British Contract Furnishing Association Award and the Made.com Award.

Based in London, the event aims to bring together over 3,500 graduates from across the major design and art disciplines, providing a platform for graduates to showcase their work.

The exhibition, which takes place in two parts, holds two awards evenings to recognise the best of the exhibits and enable businesses and organisations to demonstrate their support for emerging UK talent and creativity.

Studying 3D Design: New Practice, Hugh was recognised for his final project design, Spun Furniture.

His functional and affordable yet unique and modern furniture uses strong magnets to hold together parts of stools and tables, while also allowing them to be easily dismantled and folded flat to minimise space required for storage and transport.

“It is absolutely amazing to have won the awards at New Designers; the reality of it all is only just setting in”, says Hugh.  “I am really grateful to Made.com, 100% Design and Lugo Group for providing me with such fantastic opportunities to develop to my idea and gain valuable experience working in industry.”

David Scott, Programme Coordinator in 3D Design, spoke about Hugh’s success:

“Hugh has developed into a designer who demonstrates a great capacity for well thought through projects with a good eye and a strong contemporary feel.  His range of foldaway tables and chairs would sit perfectly in any modern design setting and he has the ability to go all the way as a designer.”

Hugh has been awarded various prizes from the companies sponsoring the three awards, including: a stand within Emerging Brands at the 100% Design exhibition in London to showcase his work; a four week placement at Lugo Group Europe and a contract to work with Made.com, collaborating to produce their own design collection over the year.
