Olympic joy for Loughborough athletes

Twenty athletes with links to Loughborough University were among 71 track and field athletes named today in Team GB for the 2012 London Olympic Games.

That takes the total to 21 because Paula Radcliffe had already been named as one of six marathon runners in the squad for the Games which run from July 27 to August 12.

There are 12 men and eight women who are current students, graduates, sports scholars or who are based at the university for their training.

Seven of the men will compete in the track events – James Dasaolu (100m and 4x100m) Martyn Rooney (400m and 4x400m), Nick McCormick (5,000m), Chris Thompson (10,000m), Andy Turner (110m hurdles), Rhys Williams (400m hurdles), and Richard Buck (4x400m).

And five compete in the field events – Robbie Grabarz (high jump), Steve Lewis (pole vault), Mervyn Luckwell (javelin), Abdul Buhari (discus), and Alex Smith (hammer).

Five women will compete in the track events – Lee McConnell (400m and 4x400m), Lisa Dobriskey (1,500m), Barbara Parker (5,000m, 3,000mSC), Nicola Sanders (4x400m) and Emily Diamond (4x400m).

Kate Dennison (pole vault), Sophie Hitchon (hammer) and Goldie Sayers (javelin) all compete in the track events.

Nick Dakin, Loughborough University’s Director of Athletics, said: “To have so many 2012 Olympians from amongst our alumni is an excellent testament to the role Loughborough is able to play in the long term development of some of Britain’s best track and field athletes.’’
