Industry collaborators help to mark opening of new laboratories

Lab Opening - Materials

Experts in materials science and engineering welcomed collaborators from industry to Loughborough University to mark the formal opening of refurbished laboratories.

The Department of Materials at Loughborough has made a number of important investments in research laboratory facilities over the past year, including a new materials degradation laboratory, furnace room and advanced friction materials laboratory.

Industrial collaborators from Faiveley Transport, Surface Transforms, Federal Mogul, Bentley Motors and Alcon Components were given a guided tour of the department’s state-of-the-art equipment and laboratory space.

These companies are working closely with experts from Loughborough to integrate the very latest technologies into vehicle components – including the creation of lighter, more hard-wearing brake discs.

Cars outside Materials

Bentley Motors and Alcon Components brought with them two high-performance cars, whose design and production could one day benefit from the University’s ground-breaking work in carbon fibre ceramic composites.

Loughborough’s Dr Houzheng Wu and his team are working to understand the friction performance of advanced materials and, most importantly, to solve problems with their practical application.

Research in this sector could make a direct contribution to the development of low-carbon emission vehicles.

The event concluded with a tour of the Loughborough Materials Characterisation Centre – a specialist testing and analysis facility widely considered to be one of the best of its kind in Europe.

The centre houses state-of-the-art, world-class facilities which are available to the University’s researchers and as a service to industry. Supported by a team of specialists, the centre has a wide range of analytical techniques, some of which have capabilities unique within the UK. The main areas of expertise are electron and optical microscopy, surface analysis, X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis.

Professor Rachel Thomson, Head of Materials at Loughborough, said: “It was great to welcome our industry partners this week and celebrate the opening of these valuable facilities.

“Staying in touch with what industry needs is a top priority as our research continues to push developments forward in many areas of strategic and global importance.’’
